Childhood Desire
Isn't it interesting...how certain movies have an impact on us.
I recently watched the newest Batman movie, The Dark Knight.
This one got me thinking and reflecting about when I was a young'en.
I absolutely LOVED to watch and play anything that dealt with knights.
My favorites were King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. These were the elite of all the warriors. You could say they were pretty bad ass.
These warriors had a CODE.
A set of standards...that they lived by
And PLEDGED to each other.
Much like the Boy Scouts that I grew up in.
I, too, made oaths and pledges.
I remember taking PRIDE in stating that I was
Honest.
Loyal.
Helpful.
Courteous.
Cheerful.
Friendly.
Brave.
Clean.
Reverent.
I took ownership of these words.
The Scout's Oath:
"On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and MY country and help other people at all times and obey the Scout Law."
I grew older and began working the summers with my Dad in construction. I remember several men telling me that I had a "Great Dad". They respected him and honored him for his hard work and integrity.
I am PROUD to carry his name.
At nineteen I spent 2 years in Alberta Canada doing a service mission where I experienced the power and influence of God. After returning home, I soon married Heather, my junior high sweetheart.
Heather and I are happily married for over thirteen years and continue to be each other's "sweetheart".
After wandering around the job market for a couple of years, and doing more fence work, I was drawn to the fire service.
I soon realized that I really enjoyed my new adventure. I remember the first "tone out". Screaming down the road in the fire engine, sirens blaring, lights flashing...
The biggest smile was planted on my face.
I just recently made the realization of the reason "Why?"
It has to do with the desire of my childhood.
You know the cross that's on every firefighter's uniform?
It's known as a Maltese Cross.
The history behind this cross and it's eight points of courage go back to the time of Christian warriors.
The points of the cross refer to:
Loyalty.
Piety.
Generosity.
Bravery.
Glory and Honor.
Contempt of Death.
Helpfulness toward the poor and sick.
Respect for God.
These Christian warriors are better known as KNIGHTS.
History tells us that they were the first organized Firefighters.
It's now all come full circle for me. Those attributes that I learned as a scout are now part of who I am as a LEADER of Men.
Today, we ride a different horse into battle. (...and I command a different crew of Knights).
Together we fight to slay the Red Dragon.
What are YOUR Red Dragons?
